| description | This paper analyzes the economic dimension of the Jesuit-Guarani missions in colonial South America from a Foucauldian-Agambenian perspective. It explores the deployment of a complex technology of economic hiper-efficientism that (co-)governed the missions. Based on a genealogical research approach, the paper argues that the technology operated not only through the Jesuit rules on administrative efficiency already discussed in the existing literature, but also through the Company of Jesus’ (crypto-)economic logics of efficientism and effectivism, a series of techniques adjusted to the missions’ realities and a spectrum of Indigenous resistances. The analysis of such a complex technology of government is put forth as a contribution for the literature on the economic history of the missions, critical studies on governmentality in/ from Latin America, and the debates on the continuities, transformations, and ruptures between the religious history of South America and its political and economic dimensions in the present time. |

Desde un enfoque foucaultiano-agambeniano, el texto analiza el plano económico de las misiones jesuítico-guaraníes en Sudamérica. Se explora el despliegue de una compleja tecnología de hiper-eficientismo económico que, independientemente de su éxito o fracaso financiero, (co-)gobernó las misiones guaraníes. A través de una metodología genealógica, se sugiere que dicha tecnología de gobierno funcionaba no solo gracias a las reglas administrativas jesuitas de eficiencia operativa ya descritas por la literatura, sino también con base en lógicas (cripto-)económicas emanadas allende de las misiones, técnicas ajustadas a las realidades misionales y un espectro de resistencias indígenas, todos elementos en constante ajuste y tensión. El análisis se ofrece como contribución para los estudios sobre la historia económica de las misiones, los estudios sobre gubernamentalidad desde América Latina y para los debates sobre las continuidades y discontinuidades entre la historia religiosa del Sur de América y las actuales dimensiones socio-políticas y económicas de dicha región. A partir de uma abordagem foucaultiana-agambeniana, o texto analisa o plano econômico das missões jesuítico-guaranis na América do Sul. É explorada a implantação de uma tecnologia complexa de hipereficiência econômica que, independente de seu sucesso ou fracasso financeiro, (co)governou as missões guaranis. Mediante uma metodologia genealógica, sugere-se que a referida tecnologia de governo funcionava não apenas graças às regras administrativas jesuítas de eficiência operacional já descritas na literatura, mas também com base em lógicas (cripto)econômicas emanadas para além das missões, técnicas ajustadas às realidades missionárias, e um espectro de resistência indígena – todos esses elementos estando em constante ajuste e tensão. A análise busca contribuir para as pesquisas sobre a histórica econômica das missões, os estudos sobre governamentalidade na América Latina, e para os debates sobre as continuidades e descontinuidades entre a história religiosa da América do Sul e as atuais condições sociopolíticas e econômicas dessa região.
