Description
Summary:This article aims to contribute to the knowledge of the history of engraving and art education in Portugal between the 18th and 19th centuries. The history of engraving begun in the 16th century reached a period of excellence in the first half of the 18th century, mainly due to King João V`s expressive patronage of the arts and artistic education. The monarch, executed a strategic policy to the service of the arts, resorting to unprecedented financing and using the state's diplomatic machinery. The creation of schools and academies, the hiring of foreign skilled labor, such as the famous Italian engraver Francesco Bartolozzi, were fundamental factors for the development of art education in general and for the art of engraving in particular. The introdution of innovative techniques such as lithography, revolutionized the national artistic panorama until the diffusion of photography that would be responsible for a paradigm shift in the world of the arts.
