Description
Summary:This paper aims to analyze the establishment of the Association of Former Combatants of Brazil in Belo Horizonte after the end of World War II (1939-1945). Mainly based on the minutes written during the meetings that took place at the association, an overview will be made about the conceptions, positions and dilemmas faced by the veterans in the immediate postwar period. During this period, the association took on a care character, and, in addition to holding celebrations and carrying out actions aimed at disseminating the memory of the community in question, it was marked mainly by fierce political disputes. The difficult social reintegration, following the demobilization of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, engendered unique forms of resistance and negotiation with the public authorities, as well as shaped the actions of former combatants within the aforementioned group. It is essential to expose the narratives and thoughts that were conceived by this social group in the immediate reestablishment of democracy after the end of the Estado Novo (1937-1945).
