Summary:In this article I propose to look at the images from the first part of Sebald's book The Emigrants, to reflect on the role they play in the construction of the narrative, causing a deviation. If, on the one hand, they create the “effect of reality”, on the other, they are so close to the reader that they end up highlighting the outer side of the narrative, making visible the very process of its construction.
