Description
Summary:In 1952, the wedding between Jakuí, a Kalapalo woman, and Ayres C. Cunha, a government scout, became a national controversy. Both the Indian Protection Service and part of the national media disapproved that union. However, the general public and another part of the press not only approved but also staged a mobilization in support of the marriage. Notwithstanding these opposing views, Kalapalo perspectives on the marriage not only were ignored but proved of little significance. This article discusses the Kalapalo point of view on this event, which reconfigures it as an episode of pacification of the caraíba (non-Indians), establishing a relation between myth, cosmology, and history.
