Description
Summary:The purpose of this article is to highlight some aspects of the birth of rock and roll in Brazil. Analyzing the short period between 1955 and 1960, we challenge the idea that at this time the rock was virtually nonexistent as a social practice, being mainly the result of sparse initiatives of renowned artists. Refusing to work with predetermined concepts concerning rock music, it is possible to observe how the same noun changes its meaning across time. An extensive analysis of newspapers and magazines makes clear that rock and roll was considered already well know, even though he was taken as a dance and not a musical genre. This is the character we focus on our analysis, what leads us to unveil an extremely rich circuit of social practices in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro. At these places contests took place where the technical superiority of the dancers and their stunts was at stake. Organized as variety shows, these events held multiple attractions, revealing how the spectacular is important to understand the social role of music at that time.
