| Summary: | Chico Buarque wrote the lyrics of “Beatriz” in 1982, for a melody by Edu Lobo as part of the ballet O grande circo místico. This essay proposes a “verse by verse” analysis of the words in the song aimed at mapping its ambitions – literary, architectonic, political, geographical – and at providing a general interpretation based on concepts of contemplation, heavenly assumption and melancholia. Although Dante’s Divine Comedy is the main evoked reference, other texts and contexts conjugate to describe the female character of the “bela atriz” – beautiful actress – in successive questions and suppositions about her figure. We begin by thinking separately about each image evoked at the composition to, only then, analyze the countless threads that intertwine in the composition. |
