Description
Summary:In this article we discuss the musical life in Rio de Janeiro in the period between 1890 and 1920, concentrated especially on the theaters. The focus of the discussion is the activities of musicians, crossing boundaries between art and popular music, boundaries that typically serve as assumption for the approaches to music in Brazil. The paper presents a brief analysis of the differentiation between these two categories in traditional musical history manuals and points to the permeability between them, due to the characteristics of the venues in which music was practiced in Rio de Janeiro during this period, the types of repertoire performed in theaters, and the features of the musicians’ work conditions.
