The paper presents a brief analysis of the differentiation between these two categories in traditional musical history manuals and points to the permeability between them, due to the characteristics of the venues in which music was practiced in Rio de Janeiro during this period, the types of repertoire performed in theaters, and the features of the musicians’ work conditions. |

Este artículo analiza la vida musical en Río de Janeiro en el período comprendido entre 1890 y 1920, centrándose especialmente en los teatros. El foco de la discusión son las actividades de los músicos, cruzando los límites entre lo clásico y lo popular, límites que típicamente sirven como suposición para los enfoques de la música en Brasil. Se presenta un breve análisis de la historiografía musical tradicional en cuanto a la diferenciación entre estas dos categorías y apunta a la permeabilidad entre ellas, debido a las características de los lugares donde se practicaba la música en el Río de Janeiro de la época, a los tipos de repertorio presentados en el teatros y las peculiaridades del trabajo de los músicos. Neste artigo discute-se a vida musical no Rio de Janeiro no período entre 1890 e 1920, centrada especialmente nos teatros. O foco da discussão são as atividades dos músicos, transpondo fronteiras entre erudito e popular, fronteiras essas que servem tipicamente de pressuposto para as abordagens sobre a música no Brasil. Apresenta-se uma breve análise da historiografia musical tradicional quanto à diferenciação entre essas duas categorias e aponta-se para a permeabilidade entre elas, devido às características dos lugares em que se praticava música no Rio de Janeiro do período, aos tipos de repertório apresentado nos teatros e às peculiaridades do trabalho dos músicos.
