Description
Summary:This article studies an excerpt of the songs universe in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It gives emphasis to the production of two scholars of Brazilian history and culture at the time: the historian Joaquim Norberto de Sousa Silva, and his volume A Cantora Brasileira [The Brazilian Singer], from 1871, and folklorist Mello Moraes Filho, with the new edition of this volume in 1901 named Serenatas e Saraus [Serenades and Soirees]. The diversity of a national songbook is developed between“modinhas” and “lundus” in order to highlight what was considered the national character in the speech of these men of letters to get acquainted with the ideas and pairs of their time. Popular music in the nineteenth century is a place of clashes on national identity and race.
