Summary:This paper aims to analyze some cururu lyrics written by Sebastião Roque during the 1940s and 1950s, archived by the Center for Folklore of Piracicaba. It is possible to notice in these lyrics elements of traditional caipira music, as the strong presence of religion, but also themes related to urban problems. By analyzing a portion of the production of a specific character, it is possible to realize the choices and the prospects of a caipira musician in front of the tradition and the professionalism and observe the relationship between caipira music and labor. The lyrics written by Sebastian Roque are also rich testimony about worker’s experience in Piracicaba, class to which many caipira musicians belonged.
