| Summary: | In dialogue with Machado de Assis’s theme of ambition and vocation in music, this article focuses on the relations between popular musicians and conservatoire musicians within the Chilean New Song movement. We elected the popular cantata Santa María de Iquique (1970) – composed by Luis Advis and performed by the group Quilapayún – as representative of the link between elements historically conceived as belonging to separate spheres (classical, popular and folk; art and politics). We seek to demonstrate how the aesthetic and thematic choices that characterize this opus closely dialogue with its political context, when there was a great expectation in the rising of a left-wing government and the intent to use the artistic milieu as a battlefield. |
