Description
Summary:The main objective of this article is to describe and to analyze the impact of the manguebeat movement or scene, from Recife, Pernambuco, on local symbolic hierarchies and, more generally, on representations about music and identities from Pernambuco. In order to do so, the main elements of the movement in its development process are exposed in a “thick description” to support the analysis of the legacies on the relationship with local popular expression, especially those of traditional bias. The analysis allows concluding that, although there is a great inertia in relation to the legitimized and established symbolic hierarchies, creative actions can lead to a inclusive change in relation to popular musical expressions. Their valorization is also in tune with more global processes of modification of the place of culture in contemporary world.
