Description
Summary:The aim of this paper is to present an analysis of the aesthetics of Brazilian contemporaneous rapper Makalister Antunes, having as a focus the debates on the contradictions of the current stage of capitalism. The relations between works of art and their socio-historical context, thus, are a point of reference, as looking for marks which may help discovering the social process dialectically represented in the songs is at the core of this study. As a premise, the idea of an “aesthetics of insomnia”, faced as a structural principle ofMakalister’s songs related to the invasion of the subjective spaces by the logic of the marketplace in contemporaneity, will be dissected. Finally, based on this analytical movement — one of a materialist basis, which makes use, also, of the methods of Tatit (2002) and Tagg (2003) —, it should be able to throw some light on questions which, despite being very fruitful, have not been discussed in depth in the context of popular music yet.
