Description
Summary:Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a clinical treatment utilized in the therapy of cancer and others diseases. In this therapy, light-sensitive molecules, called photosensitizers, are activated by visible light generating reactive forms of oxygen. These reactive species initiate a sequence of oxidative events resulting in tumor cell death by apoptosis and/or necrosis. The purpose of this review is to present the basic principles (physical, chemical and biological) of PDT as well as its potential of application and new researches on this modality of medical therapy.
