Summary:This article puts forward an interpretation of Tib.1.1.11-12 that first seeks to identify their allusion to the language of the old Latin carmina and then investigates the transformation undergone by those materials according to the procedures of Hellenistic poetics. This case study, it is argued, sheds light on the importance of carmina for Augustan poetry while also suggesting that this is a matter of active appropriation to be understood from the viewpoint of the Augustan poets’ poetic programmes.
