Landscape painting in the nineteenth century: prelude to an exhausted nature

The disempowerment of nature is a cultural phenomenon based on the assumption that humans have total control over the natural environment. This study investigates how this phenomenon has been represented in the art of painting. It suggests that its roots can be traced back to Romanticism’s depiction...
