Summary:The Lamentation over the dead Christ which Rosso Fiorentino painted for a confraternity of laymen in Borgo Sansepolcro comes with a vast corpus of critical albeit heterogeneous literature. Its complex iconography is still subject to interpretation. This article aims to examine more extensively the content and significance of the altarpiece through the lens of social history, theology – especially the revival of spirituality during the sixteenth century in Italy – as well as stylistic studies.
