| Summary: | In 1986, the musician Chico Mário published a book entitled Como fazer um disco independente [How to make an independent record], in which he presented an overview of the Brazilian phonographic market, the political meanings attributed to independent music production and also included a series of practical recommendations for the musician who intended to record and publicize his work on his own. That same year, the musician also released his fifth solo album, Retratos [Portraits], with twelve instrumental compositions in which he pays tribute to several artists who influenced his musical aesthetics. Thus, his critical approach to Brazilian music production presented in the aforementioned book gained an aesthetic reinforcement by presenting a disc that is artistically linked to a particular representation of national music. With a focus on these two works, one critical and the other aesthetic, this article presents an analysis of the main foundations and characteristics of Chico Mário's musical and political proposal, relating the critical text of the artist and his musical creation with some aspects relevant to the themes of independent music production, cultural resistance and Brazilian instrumental music, in the context of the 1980s. |
