Summary:The term computational thinking, widely used in recent years, revives an old debate about the importance of bringing practices from computer science to education. From the analysis of a set of studies and curricula we try to: (i) show some relations between "computational thinking" and "algebraic thinking" and (ii) reflect on possible educational, social and economic impacts of this growing movement. Our objective is to contribute to a reasoned discussion about the theme, considering that there are current economic and geopolitical issues that result in different goals for education.
