Summary:The article rescues an important reference in the field research and in the recording of songs of popular origin. In the 1920s, Rio de Janeiro's Elsie Houston systematized her work in search of musical Brazilianness based on indigenous, African and Iberian heritage. In this sense, the objective of the study is to rescue the preservationist estate left by the musician and to highlight the relevance of Elsie for studies on music, identity and culture. In addition to collecting popular songs that would be at risk of disappearance, Elsie recorded 42 songs from different regions of Brazil in a scientific publication, showing the timbre, pronunciation and intentions of the songs. Thus, the methodology of the article analyzes the convergences of the researcher's legacy based on theories about documentary. To this end, the study uses the writings of Penafria (2004), Nicholls (2012) and Ramos (2001 and 2013) to approach and expand the concepts of the creative record of encounters with others
