| Summary: | Soon after the funerary monument to industrial Nami Jafet (1860-1923) was finished, the author, Materno Giribaldi (1870-1951), published a commemorative booklet – edited by graphic artist Elvino Pocai (1870-1951) – titled Symbology of the Monument to Jafet Family. The publication expressed the sculptor’s thoughts on death and transcendence, which guided the creation of the mausoleum located in the Consolação cemetery (São Paulo, Brazil). Aside from the unabridged transcription of the booklet, certain aspects of Giribaldi’s career are presented to shed light on the ideas at the core of the monument’s symbology, including parallels with Leonardo Bistolfi’s (1859-1933) mortuary conception. |
