Description
Summary:This article reflects on the relationship between consumer food choices and sustainability, based on the case study of an open market in the city of Macaé (RJ). Using participant observation and interviews with consumers on the fair, it aims to identify the reasons and interests that guide their consumption decisions, with special attention to environmental issues. The survey showed the search for organics at the fair as strongly associated with concerns about food quality, but not always connected with the family-based production dynamics, such as the struggle for land and access to water. Environmental issues are present in consumers' choices, although they do not always translate into a conduct consistent with the search for sustainability.
