Description
Summary:I analyze in this paper the award for the painting Moenda by Heitor dos Prazeres at the I São Paulo Museum of Modern Art Biennial, identifying what project of modernity his laureate defended. To this end, I examined the reception in the press of Prazeres' activities as a musician and painter in the twenty-five years between the beginning of his professionalization and the award, in 1951. In this research, I could locate a close dialogue stablished by him with the debates regarding the constitution of a project of national identity, and with a political culture produced by Black intellectuals attentive to the constant re-imagining of the mechanisms of racial inequality in which Prazeres was involved as a Black man. Finally, I propose a reading of the canvas Moenda in the light of these experiences.
