Summary:The urban set of colonial architecture of São Luís do Maranhão, a former Portuguese colony, has been classified by UNESCO, in 1997, as World Heritage Site. An irrefutable and datable proof of the presence of mother country in this set is the elements in limestone, imported from the region of Sintra, mostly found in the frames of the openings and in the balconies of the buildings façades. This paper, which approach model was historical research by using the direct observation method, contextualizes the key moments occurred in both places, of origin and destination, that contributed for the advent of limestone in the architecture of São Luís.
