Description
Summary:This article aims to contribute to the knowledge of the influence exercised by the trilogy: landscape-image - Grand Tour - travel literature, in the creation and dissemination of Sintra's image. The articulation of these three factors and the sphere of influence of each one of them transforms Sintra into a privileged place in the eyes of the spectator-contemplator. The growing dissemination of Sintra, especially in the travel literature, had as main consequence an increase in travelers, that today we would call tourists. English are more numerous, since the Grand Tour, as a phenomenon that motivated young aristocrats to travel all over Europe, began in England. However, as the eighteenth century progresses, there is a diversification of the nationalities of tourists who visit Sintra and produce literature about the place. At the same time, the Grand Tour and the travel literature have enhanced an intervention in the scenographic landscape of Sintra, which has mainly involved the construction, recovery and enhancement of the existing cultural and natural heritage, of palaces, parks and gardens, operating a visual reconfiguration of the real, often giving certain structures an aspect of abandonment, decadence, savage and even ruin that aims, objectively, to adapt the characteristics of the place to the aesthetic spirit of the romantic movement.
