Description
Summary:The large scale social and economic transformations that has been occurring in capitalist society since 1970’s poses challenges to contemporary critical social theories that has been seeking to understand the nature of this change and its consequences. This paper attempts to address one dimension of this transformation: capitalist temporality. For this, we present a reading of Moishe Postone arguments on the nature of time in capitalism, which are elaborated from his reading of Karl Marx’s mature theory – with special attention to the Grundrisse and Das Capital. The conclusion of this reading is that, according to Postone, the duality of commodity form constitutes a relation between a concrete temporal dimension (use-value) and an abstract temporal dimension (value) which implies a specific historical time that is increasingly dense, speed and instable.
