Description
Summary:This study provides a combination of historical and archaeological data on the construction contexts of the archaeological site of the former Primatial Church and Cathedral or “Igreja da Sé” of Salvador in Bahia, Brazil. It starts out by presenting the historical background that encouraged and forced Portugal to found the city of Salvador, viewing this urban center as a systemic part of the establishment of Portuguese power and control in the New World. The establishment of the Primatial Church is viewed in this context, focusing on the circumstances of its construction and chronologically presenting historical information derived from primary and secondary documents, photographic data and evidence from archaeological materials that date to the period when these events occurred.
