Description
Summary:This article analyzes the formation of Vanguarda Paulista Instrumental (VPI) as a central object of study to reflect and investigate the articulation between Brazilian jazz, popular music and instrumental compositions during the last third of the civil-military dictatorship (1964-1985). In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Brazilian music market underwent several transformations. During this period, VPI incorporated new sounds into the universe of popular instrumental music and Brazilian jazz. Basing their proposals on the experimentalism of jazz fusion in friction with various notions of “musical Brazilianness”, they found in independent music production the possibility of mediation to include their works in the Brazilian phonographic industry. Bands such as Metalurgia (1981 - 1983), Pé Ante Pé (1979 - 1983), Divina Increnca (1978 - 1981), Pau-Brasil (1978 - current) and Grupo Um (1976-1984), among many others. Vanguarda Paulista Instrumental is formed by the convergence of certain elements and characteristics that circumscribe both the solutions for managing artistic careers and the musical aesthetics of the bands in the same and very specific field of possibilities, as we will see in this text.
