Summary:This article presents an analysis of the discourses delivered by Félix-Émile Taunay, as director of the Fine Arts Imperial Academy in Rio de Janeiro, between 1834 and 1851. These discourses, kept at the D. João VI Museum in Rio de Janeiro, make up a most valuable source about the artistic thoughts of Taunay during his tenure as director of the artistic institution. In the discourses, he proposes teaching techniques as well as theories based on French and English academic models. Therefore, webriefly discuss the practice of academic discourse in France and England, in order to try and grasp its references, and to shed light into a few important issues, such as architecture and education through the Fine Arts. Such issues were fundamental to Taunay’s direction of the Brazilian Academy as well as to the construction of national memory.
