Description
Summary:During the XVII and XVIII centuries, fluvial expeditions that left from the city of Porto Feliz, in the Capitania of São Paulo, occupied themselves with the task of colonizing, identifying, protecting and supplying the western fringes of Portuguese America. These expeditions, named monções, not only had a prominent role in the effective occupation of the borders of the Portuguese Empire in the Americas but also left marks of its existence in the material culture and the archeological patrimony in the region that today is delimited by the states of São Paulo, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. This work sets out toidentify part of this patrimony and point out problems whose solutions can contribute to a better understanding of this historical period.
