Summary:This research developed a conceptual framework proposal to analyze the contribution of information technology to the performance of document management in public institutions. The research is exploratory and bibliographical and the foundations of the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) guided the development of the framework. A framework composed of performance perspectives, strategic objectives, strategic map, document management indicators, as well as guiding questions to analyze the contribution of the information technology. The composition of the framework allowed the identification of a broad spectrum of IT support possibilities for document management performance. In general, these possibilities are related to user satisfaction, the quality of document management processes, the ability to learn, innovate and improve the document management and, the optimization of the financial resources of document management and, consequently, of the organization as a whole.
