Summary:The paper aims at discussing the archaeological study of wrecks along the Brazilian coast. This subject is still fraught with a discussion about its epistemological status as nautical, underwater or maritime archaeology. The paper then turns to a case study: an American slave ship wrecked at Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1852. The ship was the Camargo. This studies aims at studying and interpreting material culture, so as to have access to information unavailable in the written records.
