Description
Summary:The objective of the paper is to present the debate about the consequences of Industry 4.0 in the world of work based on reports by multilateral organizations, academic studies and projections by consulting firms about technological transformations and their impacts on employment. First, the main changes in the economic structure due to the advance of “advanced manufacturing” are analyzed. Next, the impacts of automation on work are discussed, highlighting the process of job destruction and creation and the new forms of labor organization. The heterogeneous impact of technological innovations on employment becomes evident, comparing central and peripheral countries in relation to the pace of change, the economic sectors and social groups most affected, and the level of qualification of the jobs eliminated and created. At the end, brief notes are made on Brazilian specificities.
