Description
Summary:The distribution of Household Income Per Capita in Brazil is analyzed using annual microdata from the “Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios Contínua” (national household sample survey) from 2012 to 2020. A decomposition of this income into eleven parcels is considered, showing that income from employers, income from rents, and the remuneration of civil servants are regressive parcels and that income from the “Bolsa Família” program is the most progressive, with targeting of the poor well above that of the “Benefício de Prestação Continuada” (BPC) – another cash transfer to the poor. Analyzing the quarterly data from the first quarter of 2018 to the fourth quarter of 2020, the impact of the “Auxílio Emergencial” (emergency aid program) paid from the second quarter of 2020 is highlighted, showing that it was responsible for the fall in inequality from 2019 to 2020.
