Description
Summary:Pórcia Guimarães Alves thesis is the object of this article, which seeks to understand the making of the research, its links with INEP, as well as its correlations with the educational agenda at the time. The investigation had as its main focus the school failure in primary education in Curitiba, taking it as a consequence of administrative, methodological, social, psychological, and biological factors. Her approach to the problem was innovative and expressed the educator's links with Anísio Teixeira, in addition to her position regarding the discussion about automatic student approval. Throughout the work, Alves rejected the current explanation about failure to be due to the intellectual capacities of the student and built an argument that, by underlining the precarious conditions of the municipal school system, focused on repetition as an effect of a juxtaposition of causes. At the end of the thesis, Alves developed a teaching experiment at Centro Educacional Guaíra, which was focused on the breakdown of school grades and its impact on student approval, placing the latter as a condition for the implementation of automatic approval.
