Next, we explore the topic of expertise and the role of experts as an object of study and delve into the implications of increased involvement of scientists in controversial areas, discussed by Dorothy Nelkin in “The Political Impact of Technical Expertise”, published in 1975, and Helga Nowotny in “Democratizing expertise and socially robust knowledge”, published 2003. We conclude that the expertise-knowledge-decision-making relationship is a topic that is being explored by the Social Studies of Science and Technology field for decades and is still under discussion. The contribution of the studies explored is to recognize that the mobilization of scientific knowledge as expertise in controversial issues is inherently conflicting and permeated by uncertainties, and identifying and reporting on such uncertainties must be part of the solution of such controversies, overcoming the idea that the role of science is to reduce the uncertainties to zero. |

El objetivo del artículo es traer los puntos principales de la discusión sobre la expertise y el papel de los expertos en la toma de decisiones, con base en Dorothy Nelkin e Helga Nowotny. Utilizando una revisión de la literatura, presentamos brevemente una historia de los Estudios Sociales de la Ciencia y la Tecnología (ESCT). En la continuación, exploramos el tema de la expertise y el papel de los expertos como objeto de estudio y profundizamos las implicaciones de una mayor participación de los científicos en áreas controversias, discutido por Dorothy Nelkin en “The Political Impact of Technical Expertise”, de 1975, y Helga Nowotny en “Democratizing expertise and socially robust knowledge”, de 2003. Concluimos que la relación entre expertise-conocimiento-toma de decisiones es un tema que ha sido explorado por la ESCT durante décadas y aún está en discusión. La contribución de los estudios explorados es reconocer que la movilización del conocimiento científico como expertise en temas controversiales es inherentemente conflictiva y está permeada por incertidumbres, y la identificación y el informe de tales incertidumbres deben ser parte de la solución de tales controversias, superando la idea de que el papel de la ciencia es reducir las incertidumbres a cero. O objetivo do artigo é trazer os principais pontos da discussão sobre expertise e o papel dos experts em tomadas de decisões com base em duas autoras em específico: Dorothy Nelkin e Helga Nowotny. Por meio de revisão bibliográfica, apresentamos brevemente um histórico dos Estudos Sociais da Ciência e da Tecnologia (ESCT). Em seguida, exploramos o tema da expertise e do papel dos experts como objeto de estudo e adentramos nas implicações do aumento do envolvimento dos cientistas em áreas controversas, discutidas por Dorothy Nelkin em “The Political Impact of Technical Expertise”, de 1975, e Helga Nowotny em “Democratising expertise and socially robust knowledge”, de 2003. Concluímos que a relação entre expertise-conhecimento-tomada de decisão é um tema que vem sendo explorado pelos ESCT há décadas e que ainda está em discussão. A contribuição dos estudos abordados é reconhecer que a mobilização do conhecimento científico como expertise em questões controversas é inerentemente conflituosa e permeada por incertezas, e identificar e informar sobre tais incertezas deve fazer parte da solução de tais controvérsias, superando a ideia de que o papel da ciência é reduzir as incertezas a zero.
