| Summary: | The article presents an ethnographic account of the Visita, an oral funeral ritual practised by the inhabitants of the seafaring fishing community of Tatajuba, located on the far-west coast of the state of Ceará, 365 kilometres from Fortaleza. In keeping with the classic anthropological theory and method of Gregory Bateson, Victor Turner, Marcel Mauss, Peter L. Berger and Lévi-Strauss, the aim is to approach the actors and symbologies that make up the Visita ritual scene, understanding its plot as a broad sign where schismogenesis and semiotics are affirmed in the various ceremonial interactions. To what extent can the oral funeral rite, which celebrates the passing of a year since the death of a ship's master, be read from the artistic-performative composition negotiated by its ritual elements? The anthropology of religion, Peircian semiotics and the anthropology of art and rite are used as a shared field of discussion, considering the possibilities of interpretation offered by these subfields. |
