Description
Summary:Mário Pedrosa was recognised for his contribution to the development of Brazilian art criticism and also for his political activism. Although he stood out for his work in these two fields, he also played a central role in the formation of a group of artists in Rio de Janeiro and in the debates between supporters of abstractionism and supporters of realism, which were fundamental to the process of renewal of modern Brazilian art. In view of Pedrosa's involvement in various fields of activity, the aim of this article is to investigate how his efforts to get closer to artists and take sides in controversies involving artistic movements helped him to establish himself as an authority on matters relating to art at a time when critics were seeking recognition under the auspices of universities.
