| Summary: | Two public aquariums were built inside the 1867 World’s Fair in Paris. If their structure borrows their fundamental principles from the great modern buildings, they are also provided with artificial cavities which refer to the tradition of Mannerist caves. This unprecedented combination reflects a large number of fantasies around technique and nature developed during the 19th century. It also comes to initiate a history of the spectacular staging of nature in these major international events. |
