Description
Summary:Introduction: The digital theses and dissertations (ETDs) are important and necessary documents for the conclusion of postgraduate courses, thus its long-term preservation is important. Due to the specificity of their metadata, a digital preservation proposal was developed for the theses and dissertations of the Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp) and the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), based on the Distributed Digital Preservation (PDD) model with the Cariniana Network of the Brazilian Institute of Science and Technology (IBICT). Objective: To establish a distributed digital preservation proposal for the (DTS) of these universities, integrated with their institutional repositories and to identify the requirements to compose a life cycle for (DTS) that incorporates the digital preservation process. Methodology: This is a literature survey in the field of Information Science, which considers definitions, strategies and methodologies applicable to the life cycle of digital preservation of ETDs. Results: Unesp and UFRN recognized in the literature the requirements and steps to compose the digital preservation life cycle process, which contemplate all stages, from its creation, use, reuse, migration and/or emulation and storage. As part of the process, they developed a "draft of a model of the digital preservation policy for collections in institutional repositories and digital libraries. Conclusion: It found that preservation of ETDs must be constant, continuous, and up to date. The institutions continue with the studies, in order to finalize the action plan and implementation of such a distributed digital preservation proposal.
