Description
Summary:The creation of the Museu Penitenciário Paulista (Penitentiary Museum of São Paulo) in the late 1930s was greatly influenced by the biological deterministic theories of the period. After the decline of such theories that instigated its creation, the museum was ostracized until it was reformulated and moved into a new building in 2014. Presently, its functions are no longer what they had been, although part of the primary ideas still endure in its exhibitions consistent with an institutionalized view of the public body responsible for it. This article aims at investigating which are the discourses comprehended in the museum and how they articulate with each other and with the people who they claim to represent. With the support of researches that embody a genealogy of the penitentiary system in São Paulo and that study the power structures within such environment, this inquiry focuses on the recognition of the Museum’s diverse boundaries.
