Description
Summary:We propose a translation of St. Augustine Epistle 10* (Divjak). Found in 1975 by Johannes Divjak, the missive was written in the form of a commonitorium in the decade of 420 AD and was addressed to his friend Alypius. This epistle presents details of his episcopal performance in North Africa, especially the application of Roman law in the territory. Furthermore, the letter reveals Augustine’s concern about enslavement and commercialization of freeborn people of African territory. Divjak himself edited (1981) the Latin text reproduced in this translation.
