This article presents a sociological interpretation of modern instances of political governance in rural areas – more specifically, the regional and municipal councils for rural development. Therefore, it will be presented a study case conducted in the municipality of Paranapanema, located in the southwestern of São Paulo state. The main issue to be investigated will be the presence of forms of symbolic and material domination of social space inside decentralized instances of socioterritorial governance. |

O debate sobre novas possibilidades de desenvolvimento para as áreas rurais ganhou projeção em muitos países no curso dos anos 90. No geral, esse debate tem apontado para a necessidade de implementação de estratégias de desenvolvimento que sustentem pactos territoriais entre diferentes atores envolvidos na rede sociopolítica local. Este artigo apresenta uma interpretação sociológica da constituição das modernas instâncias de governança política das áreas rurais – mais especifi camente, os conselhos regionais e/ou municipais de desenvolvimento rural. Para tanto, abordaremos um estudo de caso realizado no município de Paranapanema, localizado na região sudoeste do estado de São Paulo. A questão principal a ser investigada será a presença das formas de dominação material e simbólica do espaço social no interior da instância descentralizada de governança socioterritorial.
