| Summary: | The expansion and modernization of the sugarcane industry in Brazil has made the work different and precarious, modifying the profi le of the workers at harvest. With the use of technology, the companies changed their criteria to hire workers, giving priority to the young and migrant ones for work during harvest time. In such a scenario, thousands of young people from country northeast change the hoe for the machete and migrate looking for survival in the sugarcane plantations of modern crops in São Paulo. The cut mechanization increases the demand for more productivity in the manual cutting. The intensification of this
work rhythm puts these young people at the limit of their physical capacity. Precarious labor is a source of worry. For how long the use of the hoe will reproduce this
condition: workers, young people, labor, and migrants? |
