Description
Summary:Current changes in the social, economic and cultural dynamics of the rural world demand a reflection about the categories currently used to analyze it. My argument is that the diversity and complexity of the contemporary rural world cannot be understood with current categories. After a review of the main lines of this debate – based on Marc Mormont and Jean Rémy (about “operative category”) and on Bourdieu (about “realized social category”) –, I argue that the “rural” is a category of understanding which classifies and organizes the social world, guiding its actions. The use of the term “locality” is suggested to empirically referenced settings, since this notion does not define the nature, urban or rural, of a group or its practices.
