| Summary: | In a context where, on the one hand, a contemporary urban anxiety can be identified in relation to eating and on the other hand the material and symbolic mobility between the countryside and the city can be more intensely perceived, this study – which adopts analytical perspectives offered by the anthropology of food – aims to discuss the perceptions of the rural by farmers and by urban dwellers. The data presented were collected in different research projects carried out between 2000 and 2005 in three distinct rural regions in Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil and in Porto Alegre, the state capital. Among the questions we point out on the basis of the analysis of food classifications by the inhabitants of Porto Alegre, we highlight a positively valued, idealized rural space. This view, by demanding foodstuffs – but also landscapes, customs, festivities, history and tourism –, helps to shape the rural environment experienced by those who live in it. |
