Description
Summary:This paper does not pretend to be a complete account and the results presented here come from ethnographic researches that have being developed in the State of Espírito Santo, since 1997. The methods consisted on gather data of nearly forty communities that define themselves as quilombolas, collecting knowledge and memories received and transmited from ancestors to new generations. It is argued that these are social processes that are enhancing the transmission of knowledge about communities’ own existence and who are its members. From that it is discussed the consciousness of quilombolas as essencialy a communitarian organization and the political posture of this knowledge as a cultural heritage supporting and leading to the demarcation of their territories and ethnic identities.
