| Summary: | The paper focuses on the uses of literacy and its relations with orality in the production of historical knowledge by a black rural community leader, whose community claims its recognition as a maroon community. It is done by analyzing the production of written versions of the oral local history by this leader.
The political contexts and demands that characterized the struggle for recognition helps to understand the production of these documents, but cannot be regarded as single causes of the production of historical knowledge. The paper argues that written versions of history do not reflect the overlapping of one way of transmitting remembrances over another. On the contrary, they are products of the co-occurrence between orality and writing. |
