Description
Summary:This article hopes to show some aspects of the administration of justice and violence during Brazil’s First Republic (1889-1930). The exposition presents what little information exists about the life of Clementino (Quelé) José Furtado, the ex-block patroller, ex-outlaw, and ex-sergeant of Governor João Pessoa’s Police Force in Paraíba who fought against the Rebels of the Sertão on the eve of the 1930 Revolution. My goal is not to effect a biographical anthropology, but rather to show how Quelé’s life demonstrates all possible relations between various exercises of power and their targets, here the inhabitants of the Vale do Pajeú das Flores, located in Pernambuco’s sertão region.
